I have amassed possessions,

invested in relationships

stored myself in pride

clothed myself in identity.

I have held out my hand

and offered these things to you

an action at once sincere, bold and foolish

“all I have is you – please let me keep the rest”.

Naked I am born

my skin my only clothes

my heart my only life

my cries my only statement.

My life’s work, to create, control

from work, from hope, from love.

Stubbornly marching on through pain

lighting fires as I go.

All is stripped away, all removed

in despair I cry at the injustice

the lies of hope and the curse of joy

nothing more, nothing more.

My God, why have you forsaken me?

What sin have I committed to reap this reward?

I trust in you, I fear you, I rage against you.

I fall exhausted, nothing left.

I will stand again

broken limbed, smashed heart

I will live again

Naked I came from my mother’s womb,
naked I’ll return to the womb of the earth.
God gives, God takes.
God’s name be ever blessed.

(Job 1:21)
