Calling the beast to heel

Today has been about trying to make

the slide down the cruel and inevitable arc of the sine curve
more fun than it has any right or desire to be.
About acknowledging the lethargic presence
of the gathering clouds of despondency
but challenging their right of rule.
About staring the Black Dog hard in his rabid eyes
noting the flecks of saliva and bared teeth
but conjuring him into a muzzle.
There have been friction burns, rain-soaked clothes
and neat rows of bite marks.
But, today, I have forced a giggle into existence
raised my umbrella, and called the beast to heel.

  1. I really like the voice of this poem…the heaviness at the beginning of the poem, then the acknowledgement of the heaviness, and at the end the rising up, giggling, and ‘calling the beast to heel.’ Having a dog myself, I can SO identify and know well what it means in this poem! Glad to see you in Pantry.

  2. Thank you Mary

  3. I can so relate–and I agree with Mary–I like the voices and liked the ending especially!

  4. thank you Audrey, very kind of you
