The Journey

We begin in darkness,

usually alone.

The soft and rhythmic murmuring of an unknown other a comfort

waking only to explore the confines of safety.

Then panic,

lungs screaming for air,

limbs thrashing at the void.

New sounds invade our world,

shapes loom and mutate in the sky,

the smell of a known unknown other a comfort.

We are confined,

gently released,

tendered to,

released again.

(And repeat).

We crawl and walk and run

and fall

alone and with others.

We lead,

and plead.

We shape and are shaped,

by design and accident,

by intent, chance and thoughtlessness.

We struggle against,

give in to,

and beat the darkness.

And sometimes the light.

We may find

the touch of a known a comfort.

We cheer,

and hold dear.

We move ever forwards,

a path only ours to walk.

Others merge and move alongside us,

Some are touched, others missed.

We notice the void,

some rush to embrace,

others to escape.

The gentle voice of the Known Unknowable encourages and welcomes us.

We end in light,

never alone.

  1. I can relate to so many of your posts here. Even before I read your bio, I figured you were/are in the ministry as I once was (I’m now disabled). As a nurse, I was the director of a pro-life Christian pregnancy center; now I’m disabled. I’ve enjoyed your posts and I’ll be back.

  2. thank you Suzy
