John 13 (pt 4)

As the poet has written:

“Love – it’s a weird thing, ain’t it?”

Four ordinary letters,

dynamite-packed with power and nuance,

meaning un-contained,

impact unstoppable.

.

And yet… and yet!

so easily withheld,

so often offered at a price.

The mark of those who follow the God-man,

too readily clothed in the opposite,

the cost too high for the giver,

the perception that benefit is too small.

.

“By this, everyone will know that you are my disciples”,

Not by right-preaching, or by self-righteousness,

never by desperate hold of doctrine over action,

Not by the creation of holy huddles or closed communities…

But by costly, risky, sometimes painful love.

Of others, of self, of God.

.

A command, not a hopeful request,

(although the Carpenter knew full-well,

that those who seek to follow will always be fallible).

non-negotiable, no opt-out box to tick.

the challenge to offer love, to offer again when it is rejected,

to offer, with apology, when previously withheld.

so you are known as a person who loves to capacity,

and who never settles for limitations.

.

” “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” ” [John 13:31-38]
