John 16 (pt 2)

We relish in the wrong of others,

Ready to throw rough taunts:

Oblivious to our own weaknesses,

Not able to admit our frequent failures,

Gleefully placing others below our own morality.

Angry at the sins we perceive,

Blind to the sins we propagate,

Our wretchedness drowning our beauty.

Unless we seek true perspective,

This behaviour will continue to rot our souls.

Service to God, not a payment for salvation,

Instead, the response of a beggar, grateful for food,

Newborn children reaching for their mothers’ breast.

Ready to believe in gods of our own making,

In wood, gold or concept.

Great is our servitude to these lower things,

High is the cost we pay.

The one who was sent to and for us,

Each soul a precious thing in His sight,

Our value untouched by our actions.

Unknowingly, we preen our pride carefully,

Saying to ourselves: “surely we are better than they!

Never stopping to consider our brokenness,

Every good deed missed and each wrong boldly committed.

Subtle shades of justification,

Shaping the understanding of our worthiness.

And still we judge others,

Needing to stand on the shoulders of those we deem lesser:

Dedicated to defining our own worth as always ‘better than they’.

Joy will not come this way:

Unless we see our own rags,

Dirty before the Lord of Lords,

Gently washed cleaner than ever before.

Embraced by the arms of the Creator,

Motivated by thankfulness and freedom,

Endeavouring to walk as he walked,

Never seeing others through the harsh lens of judgement,

Thankful that the Prince of this world is condemned, and not us or them.

“All this I have told you so that you will not fall away. They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God. They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me. I have told you this, so that when their time comes you will remember that I warned you about them. I did not tell you this from the beginning because I was with you, but now I am going to him who sent me. None of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ Rather, you are filled with grief because I have said these things. But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgement: about sin, because people do not believe in me; about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; and about judgement, because the prince of this world now stands condemned”. [John 16:1-11]
