John 18 (pt 3)

Malchus.

.

How often did you reach and touch the invisible scar?

What shape did your thoughts take as you remembered,

The flash of silver in the darkness of the garden?

Did you value the dawn chorus with greater intensity,

Knowing how close you came to having it snatched away?

What did you think of that man?

The one who attacked you so thuggishly?

When you later saw him preaching love in your own temple?

And the other?

The one you came to arrest, that Peter tried to defend…

Did you remember his restorative touch,

as the nails entered his healing hands?

Or was it later, as persistent rumours spread,

That you wondered at the power that had touched you?

.

“Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, cutting off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.) Jesus commanded Peter,“Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?” “

[John 18:10-11]
