John 18 (pt 4)

How quick we are,

Rushing in to God’s defence,

As if the Creator and Sustainer of all things,

Requires from us a heavy shield and sharpened sword.

We hasten to prejudge observed motives and machinations,

Protecting our god from our own prejudices and assumptions.

We see things through our parochial lens, distorted,

We fail to grasp our naked, bruised weakness,

And attempt to wrestle from Him,

The wider purpose at hand.

“Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, cutting off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.) Jesus commanded Peter,“Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?” “

[John 18:10-11]
