John 18 (pt 10)

What is truth?

.

Pilates’ question echoes through the ages,

And even after so many years have passed,

The temptation remains to see partiality as whole,

And outlaw alternative that are uncomfortable or simply ‘other’.

.

Pilate did the same, of course.

His question was loaded with rhetoric,

A dismissal of a parallel, rather than a genuine enquiry,

An escape route from an uncomfortable conference,

A wrestling back of his own momentum.

.

An honest exploration of the concept,

Requires more intellectual wrestling than Pilate can afford,

And so he moves steadily back towards the hand-basin,

Eyes wide and watching for an alternative ending,

Where truth is once again owned by the Empire.

.

““You are a king, then!” said Pilate. Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.” “What is truth?” retorted Pilate.” [John 18:37]
